چکیده

Thomas M. Iliffe Bermuda Biological Station for Research Ferry Reach GE 01, Bermuda Significant biological and geological discoveries have resulted from the use of specialized cave diving techniques for the exploration and study of anchialine caves. Many new and higher taxa of troglobitic organisms have been found, some of which are relic "living fossils". Marine troglobites have at least three possible origins: (1) localized cave colonizations with dispersal by ocean currents, (2) Tethyan origin with dispersal by sea floor spreading and continental drift, and (3) deep sea origin, possibly in association with deep water caves. Geological phenomena of interest in anchialine limestone and volcanic caves include submerged stalactites and stalagmites, cave morphology, mineralogy, and sediments.

Patterns of genetic connectivity among anchialine habitats: a case study of the endemic Hawaiian shrimp Halocaridina rubra on the island of Hawaii.

Anchialine habitats, landlocked bodies of mixohaline water that fluctuate with the tides but have no surface connection to the sea, are known from around the world. Many anchialine organisms have widespread distributions and it has been hypothesized that high levels of gene flow and low levels of genetic differentiation are characteristic of populations from these habitats. However, the general...

On the Origin of Misophrioid Copepods from Anchialine Caves

Phylogenetic relationships between the known genera of the order Misophrioida permit the identi® cation of two lineages: one consisting of the family Misophriidae Brady, 1878 which comprises seven genera, and a new, monotypic family, the Palpophriidae Boxshall & Jaume, 1999; the other consisting of another new family, the SpeleophriidaeBoxshall & Jaume, 1999, comprising eight genera. A new species of Typhlatya (Crustacea: Decapoda: Atyidae) from anchialine caves on the French Mediterranean coast

A new species of the thermophylic Tethyan relict prawn Typhlatya is described from two anchialine caves near Perpignan (southern France). The new species is closely related to a congener known only from a freshwater cave at Castellón (eastern Spain), about 400 km to the south-west, differing apparently only in the size and shape of the rostrum and the armature of the dactylus of the fifth perei...

Global Biodiversity and Phylogenetic Evaluation of Remipedia (Crustacea)

Remipedia is one of the most recently discovered classes of crustaceans, first described in 1981 from anchialine caves in the Bahamas Archipelago. The class is divided into the order Enantiopoda, represented by two fossil species, and Nectiopoda, which contains all known extant remipedes. Since their discovery, the number of nectiopodan species has increased to 24, half of which were described ...

Management Considerations for the Heard Island Lava Tube Caves

Heard Island contains a system of lava tube caves in a largely pristine condition which are the best developed bedrock caves known in Antarctic or Subantarctic latitudes. They require special management, because of significant and sometimes fragile attributes associated with cave geomorphology, geology, hydrology, atmospheres, soils, microbiology, flora, fauna, vertebrate palaeontology, archaeo...
